'We Were the Original Rebels': The Women Reshaping Grassroots Music Culture Throughout Britain.

Upon being questioned about the most punk thing she's ever done, Cathy Loughead responds instantly: “I performed with my neck fractured in two spots. Not able to move freely, so I bedazzled the brace instead. It was a fantastic gig.”

Cathy is a member of a rising wave of women reinventing punk music. As a new television drama focusing on female punk airs this Sunday, it echoes a phenomenon already blossoming well past the TV.

The Leicester Catalyst

This energy is felt most strongly in Leicester, where a recent initiative – currently known as the Riotous Collective – lit the fuse. She joined in from the beginning.

“In the early days, there were no all-women garage punk bands locally. By the following year, there seven emerged. Today there are twenty – and increasing,” she remarked. “There are Riotous groups throughout Britain and worldwide, from Finland to Australia, producing music, playing shows, appearing at festivals.”

This surge extends beyond Leicester. Across the UK, women are taking back punk – and transforming the scene of live music in the process.

Rejuvenating Performance Spaces

“There are music venues throughout Britain doing well thanks to women punk bands,” she added. “So are rehearsal studios, music education and guidance, production spaces. This is because women are filling these jobs now.”

Additionally, they are altering who shows up. “Female-fronted groups are playing every week. They attract broader crowd mixes – attendees who consider these spaces as secure, as belonging to them,” she continued.

An Uprising-Inspired Wave

An industry expert, involved in music education, commented that the surge was predictable. “Ladies have been given a dream of equality. Yet, misogynistic aggression is at epidemic levels, the far right are using women to promote bigotry, and we're deceived over issues like the menopause. Ladies are resisting – via music.”

Another industry voice, from the Music Venue Trust, observes the trend transforming community music environments. “We are observing broader punk communities and they're integrating with local music ecosystems, with independent spaces programming varied acts and building safer, friendlier places.”

Mainstream Breakthroughs

In the coming weeks, Leicester will present the inaugural Riot Fest, a three-day event featuring 25 all-women bands from the UK and Europe. Recently, a London festival in London showcased BIPOC punk artists.

And the scene is entering popular culture. A leading pair are on their first headline UK tour. The Lambrini Girls's first record, Who Let the Dogs Out, charted at sixteenth place in the UK charts recently.

Panic Shack were shortlisted for the 2025 Welsh Music Prize. Another act won the Northern Ireland Music Prize in 2024. A band from Hull Wench appeared at a major event at Reading Festival.

This represents a trend born partly in protest. In an industry still affected by sexism – where female-only bands remain lacking presence and live venues are shutting down rapidly – female punk bands are establishing something bold: a platform.

No Age Limit

At 79, a band member is proof that punk has no expiration date. The Oxford-based washboard player in horMones punk band began performing only twelve months back.

“As an older person, restrictions have vanished and I can follow my passions,” she said. Her latest composition includes the chorus: “So scream, ‘Fuck it’/ This is my moment!/ The stage is mine!/ I'm 79 / And in my fucking prime.”

“I love this surge of elder punk ladies,” she commented. “I wasn't allowed to protest during my early years, so I'm rebelling currently. It's fantastic.”

Another musician from the Marlinas also noted she couldn't to rebel as a teenager. “It has been significant to release these feelings at this late stage.”

A performer, who has performed worldwide with multiple groups, also views it as therapeutic. “It involves expelling anger: going unnoticed as a mother, at an advanced age.”

The Freedom of Expression

That same frustration inspired Dina Gajjar to create her band. “Being on stage is a liberation you were unaware you lacked. Girls are taught to be acquiescent. Punk defies this. It's raucous, it's raw. It means, during difficult times, I say to myself: ‘I'll write a song about that!’”

Yet, Abi Masih, drummer for the Flea Bagz, stated the female punk is every woman: “We're just ordinary, working, brilliant women who love breaking molds,” she commented.

Maura Bite, of the Folkestone band She-Bite, agreed. “Ladies pioneered punk. We needed to break barriers to be heard. This persists today! That rebellious spirit is within us – it feels ancient, elemental. We are incredible!” she exclaimed.

Breaking Molds

Not every band conform to expectations. Julie Ames and Jackie O'Malley, part of The Misfit Sisters, aim to surprise audiences.

“We rarely mention age-related topics or curse frequently,” commented one. O'Malley cut in: “Well, we do have a brief explosive section in every song.” She smiled: “Correct. Yet, we aim for diversity. The latest piece was about how uncomfortable bras are.”
