🔗 Share this article The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze. My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games. Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are taking over the industry. A Legacy of Leaping Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their popularity has noticeably increased in recent times. A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures. Charting the Croak Comeback To understand this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots. The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025. This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming looks particularly pronounced. Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage Honestly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers. Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game. Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes. Several the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer. The Leap Into 2026 So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming. If these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
