Students Share Concerns That Artificial Intelligence Is Eroding Their Academic Abilities, Research Reveals

According to recent research, learners are voicing concerns that employing artificial intelligence is weakening their capability to study. Numerous complain it renders schoolwork “overly simple”, while others argue it limits their innovative capacity and impedes them from learning new skills.

Extensive Use of AI Among Pupils

An analysis focused on the usage of AI in British schools revealed that just 2% of pupils between the ages of 13 and 18 reported they did not use AI for their schoolwork, while the vast majority indicated they regularly used it.

Unfavorable Influence on Skills

Regardless of artificial intelligence's prevalence, 62% of the pupils stated it has had a negative impact on their skills and growth at their educational institution. 25% of the students affirmed that AI “enables me to obtain answers with minimal personal effort”.

A further 12% reported artificial intelligence “restricts my imaginative processes”, while comparable figures stated they were less prone to solve problems or compose originally.

Sophisticated Understanding By Students

A professional in generative AI noted that the research was one of the initial to analyze how youth in the UK were incorporating AI into their education.

“The thing I find fascinating is how sophisticated the answers are,” the expert said. “For 60% of students to say they are concerned that AI tools encourage copying rather than doing original work, that’s a very deep understanding of what your schoolwork is meant to help you do, and what the pitfalls and benefits are associated with this technology.”

The expert continued: “Students employing this tool exhibit a remarkably advanced and mature perception of its role in their academics, a fact that is often overlooked when considering their autonomous use of technology in learning environments.”

Research-Based Investigations and Wider Issues

The findings are consistent with scientific studies on the usage of AI in academics. A particular analysis measured cognitive signals during essay writing among students using large language models and found: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”

Roughly half of the 2,000 pupils questioned expressed they were concerned their peers were “secretly using AI” for schoolwork without their instructors being able to identify it.

Request for Guidance and Positive Elements

Many respondents reported that they wanted more guidance from instructors for the appropriate use of AI and in judging whether its responses was trustworthy. An initiative designed to aiding educators with AI guidance is being initiated.

“Some of these findings will be very interesting for teachers, especially around how much students are expecting guidance from teachers. We sometimes think there is a technological generational divide, and yet they are still looking at their teachers for guidance in how to use this technology productively, and I find that very positive,” the specialist commented.

A school leader observed: “The findings closely reflect what I see in school. Many pupils recognise AI’s value for creativity, revision, and problem-solving but often use it as a shortcut rather than a learning tool.”

Merely 31% reported they didn’t think AI use had a unfavorable impact on any of their competencies. Yet, the bulk of pupils reported using AI aided them acquire fresh abilities, for instance 18% who reported it assisted them comprehend problems, and 15% who said it helped them generate “innovative and improved” ideas.

Student Viewpoints

Upon further inquiry, one 15-year-old female student said: “I have been able to understand maths better and it helps me to solve difficult questions.”

At the same time, a male student of age 14 said: “I now think faster than I used to.”
